The mechanized soldiers were an army of World War I warriors made from the corpses of Germans killed in battle. They are reanimated with clockworks and steam, then sent back to the front lines. Under the command of the Colonel, these soldiers are no longer alive; just an army of gears with memories of their human lives. The gas masks they wear were developed post-World War I.[1]
They tried to help the Courier escape with his map.[2]
