About the SongEdit
Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie wrote “When the Levee Breaks” and recorded it in 1929. Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham (collectively known as Led Zeppelin) rewrote/reworked the song (and credited Minnie for the lyrics) for their fourth album, which was released in 1971.
- The original lyrics referred to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, which destroyed hundreds of homes and farm fields and helped spur the Great Migration of the population westward.
